InstantOnline Basic™ 1.0 released
Hermosa Beach, CA -- June 2, 1998 -- Gefion software
today announced the immediate availability of
InstantOnline Basic 1.0. InstantOnline Basic is a
standards based solution for Web Browser database
access. Conformance to the Java Servlet API, JDBC and
HTML 3.2 makes InstantOnline Basic extremely portable
and scalable. Being a Servlet based product,
InstantOnline Basic also offers greatly improved
performance over CGI based solutions and allows
a developer to use InstantOnline Basic with any Web
Authoring and Site Management tool.
"From our own experience and by talking to other Web
Site developers we realized that accessing a database
from a Web Browser was much more complicated than it
had to be," said Hans Bergsten, President of Gefion
software. "All solutions out there were either
proprietary or too expensive for the basic needs of
most Web Sites. So we decided to develop an open,
standards based, solution, gaining ease of use and
scalabilty by leveraging other standards based
products. InstantOnline Basic is that solution."
InstantOnline Basic is a set of Servlets that are
embedded in HTML files using HTML-like <SERVLET>
tags. The Servlets can be used to read information from
a database and present the result as an HTML table or
as a free-form HTML pattern, and to store information
submitted by a user through an HTML FORM. All database
query parameters and HTML properties can be set to fit
the customers exact needs.
The Servlet API is supported by all major Web Servers,
natively or through inexpensive or free 3rd-party
add-ons, as well as by high-end Application Servers,
such as Dynamo and NetDynamics. InstantOnline Basic
uses JDBC, the standard Java database interface,
to read and modify data, ensuring support for all
major database engines.
Hundreds of developers around the world have tested
the Beta version of InstantOnline Basic. "Gefion
Software's InstantOnline product, in combination with
the InstantDB database product, is the fastest way
I've found to get started with databases and Web pages
using server-side Java," said Daniel Kehoe, Fortuity
Consulting.
